Harrison School for the Arts in Lakeland Florida

It is always a pleasure to write about an upcoming concert or a performance by the students and faculty of Lakeland’s Harrison Arts. And with all performances that Harrison School for the Arts has to offer throughout the year, this showcase of the Winter Dance Concert brings out the Best for the Harrison Dance Department. Guest artists such as Peter Pucci, who is the Artistic Director of PucciPlus and was principal in Pilobolus and David Sutherland, who performed with the Stuttgart Ballet joined faculty members Susan Olson and Gloria Haigler to bring their works on the main stage of the Lois Cowles Harrison Center for the Visual and Performing Arts.

In addition some wonderful choreographed movements and dances, a performance of Concerto 622 by Lar Lubovitch will be presented by the junior repertory class. Did you know that Harrison School for the Arts faculty member and dance instructor, Gloria Haigler, performed these roles worldwide while a company member of the Lar Lubovitch Dance Co.?

So, please come and enjoy this great performance by these fine dance students on Friday, January 30th and Saturday, January 31st, 2009 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased securely online at the Harrison School for the Arts web site with a nominal merchant fee for adults $8.00 and $6.00 for students and seniors. Lakeland Florida – Annual Pig Fest at Tigertown

I can’t imagine there is no other place you would hang out this weekend if you any where near Lakeland, Florida!

Where in the world around this time of the year would you find the best barbeque? Ready for food, entertainment for the whole family to enjoy! Then look no further and come’ on down to the 2009 Lakeland Pig Festival on January 30th – 31st, 2009.

A tad bit of history lesson! It started all in 1994 when a small group of local businessmen attended the Blue Ridge Mountain town of Tyron, N.C. to watch a barbeque championship. From then on, a festival committee was established and Lakeland’s Pig Festival welcomed its first barbeque competitors in 1997. Since then, professional teams and backyard teams travel great distances to compete separate in now five different categories in Ribs (loin and spare), Pork (shoulder and butt), Chicken, Brisket (beef) and Sauce. The Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS) Professional Competition and Judging School considers Lakeland’s Pig Fest to be one of the finest events sanctioned by KCBS. Lakeland’s annual Pig Fest held at Joker Marchant Stadium has since then grown to over 300 Barbeque Teams competing for prize money and attendance growing quickly each year.

Now in its 12th year of competition, there is also a kids barbeque judging that is held Saturday, January 31st 2009.

The Junior League of Greater Lakeland became in 2005 the lead organizer for this great event and they do an outstanding job providing volunteers to see that this free event is run smoothly. The event in itself is free, such as the concerts – as you walk towards the gate, let me suggest you buy “Pig Dollars” near the entrance for food and drinks and also some for your kids, since I’m sure they want to take part in arts & crafts, climbing and jumping. Don’t worry if you run out of the “Pig Dollars or “Pig Bucks”, there are various locations throughout the area for you to buy more.

I have been attending this free event with my family since it first started, it is by far one of the best events with regards to food, entertainment and activities for young and old – not to mention the great weather we have this time around in Lakeland Florida. Where else in the world are you getting the best tasting barbeque you’ll taste this year? Besides my husband’s great tasting ribs …… right here at the annual Pig Festival at Tiger Town in  Lakeland, Florida located right next to the Joker Marchant Stadium which is also known as the location for the Detroit Tigers Baseball Spring Training Stadium. Besides the scrumptious barbeque and sauces, they also offer some great desserts, such as strawberry shortcakes – Folks, here in Florida we are in Strawberry season!

Bring your kids, grand-kids, your grandma and grandpa, visit and eat some of the best barbeque on January 31, 2009 from 5:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. January 31st from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Click here for a complete schedule for this event. There will be a free concert by Atlanta Rhythm Section
on Friday night – check it out!

Lakeland Florida – Celebrate Seniors at “First Friday”

The Downtown Lakeland Partnership hosts every month on the First Friday of each month a free event at Munn Park. January’s theme is “Celebrate Seniors”; this celebration is on January 2nd, 2009 inviting seniors and their families for a fun evening filled with arts, classic car shows, music and entertainment along the streets surrounding the lovely “Munn Park”.

Why “Celebrate Seniors”? To me, seniors today are yesterday’s groundbreakers – who were the teachers who taught my children, the doctors who delivered my children, the carpenters who built my home, police, firefighters, lawyers, plumbers, entrepreneurs and service members of the military – they are your fathers, mothers, grandfathers and grandmothers – the backbone of your family truly deserving to be honored on this special day.

Remember this is a family celebration – an event filled for the whole family to enjoy.

Lakeland’s First Friday free event starts at 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Senior service organizations with info about their groups will be at Munn Park as well as shops and restaurants will stay open late for your convenience.

Lakeland’s Harrison Symphony Orchestra Fall Concert 2008

Harrison School for the Arts proudly presents The Harrison Symphony Orchestra on November 20th at 7:30 p.m.

This almost 100 student ensemble is well thought throughout the United States and Europe. Last year the orchestra performed at the Midwest Clinic in Chicago. During their great performance, an international committee was so amazed by their concert that they invited the entire ensemble to play in France sometime in 2010.

I have been involved over the years with Harrison School for the Arts and the Orchestra is near and dear to my heart. They have always performed throughout the years to the best of their abilities and this year’s fall concert will be no different with classical repertoire you don’t want to miss.

Where else can you go to a wonderful orchestra performance at a great price? You can purchase your tickets online at www.harrisonarts.com. Tickets are $7.00 for adults and $5.00 for students and senior citizens.

Lakeland’s Harrison School for the Arts presents “Pirates of Penzance”

In years past musicals like “Singing in the Rain”, “Starting Here, Starting Now” and the “King and I” brought exhilaration and a full house to Lakeland’s Harrison School for the Arts theatre. This year, despite the ongoing construction at the school, the show must go on and you will be astonished by the exceptional talents these High School kids from departments such as musical theater, music, dance, orchestra and theater departments, showcase.

For the next two weeks, students from the Lois Cowles Harrison Center for the Visual and Performing Arts will present this fanatical rendition of “The Pirates of Penzance” by W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan.

The raucous operatic tale of a young pirate apprentice named Frederic who decided to leave the pirate life forever. Feeling obliged, however, to point out the pirates’ weakness being too softhearted. Apparently, all a captive must do is claiming to be an orphan and he is immediately released. Frederic, who has never seen any woman other than his partially deaf nurse, Ruth, stumbles upon a group of beautiful maidens and immediately falls in love with the Major General Stanley’s daughter Mabel. Soon thereafter, the pirates arrive and want to marry the rest of the Major General’s daughters. While the Major General Stanley recruits help from the police to stop the pirates, Frederic offers to help Stanley and the police to protect the ladies but soon realizes being torn by his slavery to duty under the swashbuckling Pirate King.

The show will be presented in the spirit of satire that Gilbert and Sullivan were known for, while at the same time, giving a contemporary audience an opportunity to enjoy the wit and style of slapstick and tongue and cheek hilarity. This production of Pirates leaps into the audience’s seats as a boisterous romp full of high spirit with sword fights and hilarity that makes an evening at the theatre enjoyable.
